They are small and flexible to fit into capillaries
They have haemoglobin which binds to oxygen in the lungs to be carried to the rest of the body via respiration
Bi concave shape which allows it to have a larger surface area to volume ration for faster diffusion of oxygen
No nucleus so that there is more room for haemoglobin
