Recycling Within Ecosystems Flashcards
what type of flow does energy have through an ecosystem?
linear flow.
why nutrients constantly have to be recycled throughout an ecosystem?
nutrients are used up by living organisms and there is no large external source constantly replenishing nutrients in the way that sun supplies energy.
what is decomposition?
a chemical process in which a compound is broken down into smaller molecules. organic material must be processed into inorganic elements, which are a more usable form, and returned to the environment.
what is a decomposer?
an organism that feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter, therefore turning organic material into inorganic material for photosynthetic producers.
how to decomposers digest their food?
externally by secreting enzymes onto dead organisms or organic waste matter.
what are some examples of decomposers?
- microscopic fungi and bacteria. Also includes arge fungi such as toadstools and bracket fungi.
