Recycling And Disposal Flashcards
Define legislation and regulations
The recycling and disposal of digital devices needs to comply with the DTA, the Environment act and the WEEE EU Directive
Define Secure Data Disposal
Using physical destruction of the hard dick or using data destruction software to overwrite the entire hard disk with random data
Define equipment recycling and disposal
Digital equipment can be disposed of by trading it in, donating it, selling it or using a specialist PC disposal company
What are the three legislation and regulations Progress Leisure needs to comply with
- Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive 2013 (WEEE) - EU regulations to encourage organisations to recycle materials
- Data Protection Act (DPA) 1998- remove personal data from equipment before dumping or recycling
- environment act 1995- responsible disposal of hazardous materials
What happens in secure data disposal
Back up data from the current system that is needed for installation onto the new system–> permanently delete data from the current system for installation onto the new system –> Dispose of or recycle digital devices and equipment that are no longer requires
Is data permanent delete from a hard disc
NO
Give examples of how data can be PERMANENTLY DELETED
- Physical destruction (crushing a hard disk makes it unusable so Data can’t be accessed from it)
The destroyed data is then worthless and there is an environmental impact as it goes to landfill
-Data destruction software: overwrites the hard disk with random data so the data can’t be recovered and the hard drive can be reused
-Mobile data deleted via factory reset
Give ways to dispose of equipment
Sale or donation of digital equipment: they could be sold or donated but devices need to make sure data is removed and it takes time and relieves to organise a sale/donation
Trade in digital equipment: supplier is responsible for disposal and you may get an allowance towards new equipment
What can specialist computer disposal companies do?
Permanently delete data on hard disks
Break down equipment to be recycled
Safely dispose of hazardous waste
Dispose of batteries
