over 35 hours per week
26
Benefits of employing part-time workers?
> more flexible in hours > easier to ask worker just to work busy times. > easier to extend business operating hours by working evenings or at weekends > fit in with looking after children and therefore the employee is willing to take lower pay. > reduces businesses cost > it's easier to make part-time workers redundant
27
Limitations of part-time employees
> less likely to seek training because they see their job as temporary > it takes longer to recruit two part-time employees than one full-time employee > they are less likely to be committed to their job and maybe more likely to leave > less likely to be promoted > more difficult to communicate with them
28
What are the main 3 types of training?
> induction training > on the job training > off the job training
29
What is induction training?
it is given to a newly hired employee, explaining to them the businesses activities and procedures
30
What is on-the-job training?
it happens by watching a more experienced employee do their job.
31
What is off-the-job training?
where you are being trained away from the workplace
32
What are the advantages of induction training?
> helps new employees settle in their job easily > may be a legal requirement to give health and safety training at the start of the job > workers are less likely to make mistakes
33
What are the disadvantages of induction training?
> time consuming > wages are paid but no work is being done > delays the start of the employee
34
What are the advantages of on-the-job training?
> the employee does not need to be sent away > insures production from the worker > it costs less > they are trained for the specific needs of the business
35
What are the disadvantages of on-the-job training?
> the trainer won't be as productive because they will be teaching the trainee > the trainer might have bad habits and pass them on to the trainee > it won't lead to training qualifications from outside of the business
36
What are the advantages of off-the-job training?
> many skills can be taught and new techniques > if courses at taught in the evening they can still come to work > the business will only need to pay for the course and will not lose the output of the employee > they may be taught different skills and become multi-skilled - will make them more versatile > uses expert trainers
37
What are the disadvantages of off-the-job training?
> costs are high > wages are being paid but no work is being done > the additional skills mean they can leave and find another job
38
What is workforce planning?
establishing the workforce needed for the business for the future in terms of numbers and skills
39
Why do businesses need to reduce the number of employees?
``` > introduction of automation > falling demand for their goods and services > factory/ shop/ office closure > relocating their factory abroad > merging of factories ```
40
H.R will plan it out
> find out skills of the present employees > not including anyone who will be leaving soon > consulting with existing staff who they want to retrain > preparing a recruitment plan and how they should be recruited
41
What are the two ways people can be reduced?
> dismissal | > redundancy
42
What is dismissal?
When employment is ended against the will of the employee, for not working under the employment contract
43
What is redundancy?
When an employee isn't needed any longer and loses their job
