Recruitment
Recruitment is the steps undertaken by a business to identify a vacancy and attract suitable candidates; this can be internal or external.
Selection
is the actions taken by a business to help identify the best candidate for the job.
Internal recruitment
Occurs when candidates for a position are recruited from within the organisation
Benefits of internal recruitment
- Lower recruitment costs
- Improved promotion prospects – motivation
- Business knows abilities of candidates
- Quicker process
- Shorter induction process
Drawbacks of internal recruitment
- Reduces talent available
- Limits number of applicants
- Cause friction between internal candidates
External recruitment
Occurs when candidates for a position are recruited from outside of the organisation.
Benefits of external recruitment
- Increases amount of talent available
- Increases number of applicants
- Can provide new sources of ideas for the company
Disadvantages of external recruitment
- Higher recruitment costs
- May upset internal candidates that have been overlooked
- Not be able to see candidates at work over a period of time
What are the stages of the recuritment process
1) Job anaylsis
2) Job description
3) Person specification
Job anaylsis
The process of gathering all of the available information about a particular job.
Job description
Sets out tasks and responsibilities of a job.
Person specification
A document within the recruitment process outlines the characteristics of the person required to do the job e.g qualifications, skills and experience. May include desirable attributes required by the candidates.
How employees are selected
Interviews, telephone interviews, testing (psyhcometric testing), work trial and selection exercises
What is testing - psychometric testing?
which involves mixture of the following: Aptitude measures the ability to develop skills and acquire knowledge. Attainment measures levels of understanding. Personality measures the aspect of a candidate’s behaviour.
Selection exercise
are structured activities that help best assess suitability of a candidate for a specific job.
Telephone interviews and why are they used
are often preliminary interviews held over the phone prior to inviting candidate to a face to face interview.
- Helps reduce time spent on face to face interview and also reduce costs.
- Popular when a large number of applicants for a vacancy.
