Defintion of appraisal
Is the process of monitoring and reviewing peformance of employees within the workforce.
- Monitors performance against pre-determined criteria
- Provides feedback
- Can act as a non-financial motivator or linked to financial incentives
- Informs future training needs
Superior assesment
A Top down review process whereby subordinate’s performance is assessed by a superior, normally their direct line manage.
- Assessor is in the direct and frequent contact with employee and therefore should be in a good position to review progress.
- However superior may not be fully trained in how to carry out assessments and how to provide feedback.
Peer assessment
Horizontal review process where an employees performance is reviewed by colleagues working at the same level.
- Reduces bias
- May be less intimidating then superior assessment
Self-assessment
Employees judge and review own performance.
- May be used as a review process to help managers lead constructive review conversation.
360 degree review
A multi stage review process that combine superior, peer and self-assessment as well as subordinate assessment.
- Gives broader idea of employees strengths and weaknesses.

- Provides feedback on employee performance
- Informs reward systems and future HR decisions including workforce planning
- Shares common goals
- Can create a motivated workforce

- Opportunity to discuss progress and future with manager as well as any grievances
- Identify where training would be needed
- Motivational (Can be stressful)
