Recovery Factors Flashcards
What are 4 misconceptions about brain injury?
- recovery depends on patients efforts/attitude
- full recovery always possible
- effects are externally visible
- patients always have good insight into their own impairments
What is INTELLECTUAL awareness?
self-awareness of current deficits
What is EMERGENT awareness?
self-monitoring & error detection during task performance
What is ANTICIPATORY awareness?
predicting how current deficits impact future performance & adjusting behaviour & expectations accordingly
What are consequences of anosognosia in terms of recovery?
- low engagement w/ rehab
- medication non-compliance
- poorer treatment outcomes
- poorer use of compensatory strategies
- stress & isolation for affected person & care partners
- need supervised/structured living arrangements
What’s the difference b/w anosognosia & denial?
when confronted w/ evidence:
anosognosia: respond w/ surprise/confabulation
denial: respond w/ resistance, anger, refusual
What is impact of AGE on recovery?
shape responsiveness to injury (good & bad)
- receptor expression
- synaptic pruning
- level of axon/dendrite outgrowth
- blood flow
- metabolic patterns
- myelination
What is impact of LESION SIZE on recovery?
larger lesions = greater functional impairments
bilateral lesions show less recovery than unilateral
What is impact of ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS on recovery?
enriched environment = better recovery
ie. high SES, social support
What is impact of SECONDARY EFFECTS on recovery?
Temporary:
- Edema: considerable swelling
- Blood flow: locally changes
- Diaschisis: sudden change of function in portion of brain connected to distant, damaged area
What is impact of CHRONIC/ACUTE INJURIES on recovery?
chronic: sudden stroke w/ large damage = functionally devastating
acute: slow-growing tumour = little impairment
What is the difference b/w COMPENSATION and PLASTICITY in recovery?
Compensation: substitution of new behaviour (“new way to do old thing”)
Plasticity: rewiring brain’s connections
