Recording Observations Flashcards
Recording your observations in words is called what?
A description
A description consists of what about the organism?
Its features and/or characteristics.
Give 3 characteristics of a gold fish.
breaths under water, has gold scales, doesn’t have teeth, has two eyes.
Observations often include drawings. What two types of drawings are most often used?
1.) True to Nature Drawing
2.) Schematic Drawing
What is a true to Nature drawing?
You draw very precisely what you see and you show all the details.
What is a Schmetic drawing?
you only draw important parts of an organism. A schematic drawing of an oak leaf shows the characteristics of all oak leafs.
If you want to observe the inside of a piece of fruit, you would cut it one of two ways. What are they?
lengthwise or crosswise. In biology, this is called a longitudinal section and a cross-section
You examine a piece of skin under the microscope. You use an eyepiece lens that magnifies 10 times and an objective that magnifies 20 times. You make a schematic drawing.
What magnification do you include at your drawing?
200
You calculate the magnification of the microscope by multiplying the magnification of the eyepiece lens with the objective used.
