Reconstructive Flashcards
What is a schema?
Mental representations go things that affect how we remember experiences
What is omission?
When things that are not important to our schemas are forgotten
What is accommodation?
Changing information to fit schema
What is rationalisation?
Changing schema to make sense to you
Who support this?
Loftus and Palmer - changing a verb from car crash video affected peoples memory - credible
OTOH - task of watching video lacks mundane realism
Who conflicts this?
Brewers and Treyens - Pts recalled items that wouldn’t usually be associated with an office which they should have omitted - lacks credibility
Other theories?
WMM - explains the sub systems within the STM - supported by KF
Usefulness?
Useful in showing that eye witness reports cannot be relied upon as people can omit things from their memory
Testability?
Everyones schema is different so cannot be tested empirically as it is only a concept
