all people born in the US have the right to be citizens and no one can deny them this right, except Native Americans
15th Ammendment
The right to vote for citizens, African American men right to vote.
Goal of Lincoln’s plan for reconstruction
Welcome South back with open arms, create new governments for the South, 10% of the male population in the Southern states took a loyalty oath to the US, smoothly and painlessly
radical republicans
demanded harsher punishment for the South, more protection for freedman, and that confederate nationalism was eliminated.
whiskey Ring Scandol
liberal Republicans in Missouri formed what became known as the Whiskey Ring. They bribed government officials and record keepers to underreport the amount of whiskey made at every level of production, allowing them to avoid exorbitantly high whiskey taxes.

Johnson’s reconstruction policies
The Confederate states would be required to uphold the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery; swear loyalty to the Union; and pay off their war debt. Then they could re-write their state constitutions, hold elections, and begin sending representatives to Washington. But radical republicans saw no effort in this new President’s policies to create rights for Blacks. he also Favored Confederate generals.
Freedmans Burea
to provide food, shelter, clothing, medical services, and land to displaced Southerners, including newly freed African Americans.
Black Codes
restricted black people’s right to own property, conduct business, buy and lease land, and move freely through public spaces.
Johnson’s impeachment
Andrew Johnson removed from office for “high crimes and misdemeanors”, quickly broke the law by firing officials without the senate’s approval
Rise of the “New South” good/bad
Good: establishments and education were largly built, South became more industrial, more jobs Bad: violence was common in the South, lots of corruption
Women suffrage groups
groups of women who fought for the right to vote. Used the 14th Ammendment as claim to their rights. Wyoming, Utah, and Montana gave women the rights to vote, but for their own gains.
Plessy Vrs. Ferguson
The ruling in this Supreme Court case upheld a Louisiana state law that allowed for “equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races.” Seprate but equal became law, Plessy was a black man who refused to move from a white only car.
Northern Economy during reconstruction
Northerners invested large sums of money to build railroads and factories in the South. As a result, people began moving to the South.
