A formal slave after the war
What was the Freedmen’s Bureau?
An organization dedicated to helping the freed slaves start a new life. They offered food, clothes, and other necessities, and eventually started to educate the free slaves and poor whites.
What is sharecropping?
a system of agriculture in which a landowner allows a tenant to use the land in return for a share of the crops produced on their portion of land.
How would share croppers get food and medicine?
The landowners would sell it to them on credit until the crop came in
How is tenant farming different from share cropping?
The farmers actually own their supplies, animals, and the seeds they use.
What were Abraham Lincoln’s conditions for the South to rejoin?
Any southerner who took an oath to the Union would be given a pardon. If 10% of the voters in a state supported the Union, then a state could be readmitted. Under Lincoln’s plan, any state that was readmitted must make slavery illegal as part of their constitution.
What were Andrew Johnson’s conditions for the South to rejoin?
The states had to ratify the 13th Amendment
What was the 13th Amendment?
Made slavery illegal
What was the 14th Amendment?
Granted citizenship to former slaves and guaranteed “equal protection of the law” for all people.
What was the 15th Amendment?
Gave all MALE citizens the right to vote, regardless of race
