Recognition Flashcards
Odysseus and Telemachus
‘And now a passionate longing for tears arose in them both and they cried aloud piercingly and more convulsively than birds of prey, vultures and crooked clawed eagles, bereaved when villagers have robbed the nest of their unfledged young.’
Odysseus and Eurycleia
‘no one that I have seen has reminded me so strongly of Odysseus’
‘at once she recognised the scar’
‘Of course! You are Odysseus, my dear child.’
‘his right hand sought and gripped the old woman’s throat’
‘Nurse… do you want to ruin me?’
Odysseus and Penelope
‘What a strange woman you are… the gods of Olympus gave you a harder heart than any other woman’
‘What a strange man you are… I am not being haughty or contemptuous of you… Come Eurycleia, move the great bed outside the bedroom’
Ody ‘No man alive… would find it easy to shift’
‘At his words her knees began to tremble and her heart melted as she realised that he had given her infallible proof’
‘Her words stirred a great longing in his heart, and he wept as he held his dear, loyal wife in his arms’
Odysseus recognises Ithaca - he can control his reaction as he does not recognise Athene in her disguise as a shepherd
‘Athene.. had spread a thick mist over the place…’
Athene ‘sir, you must be simpleton or have travelled very far from home to ask me what country this is’
‘Odysseus’ patient heart leapt up… he revelled in the knowledge he was on native soil… he addressed her with words on wings but not with the truth’
Odysseus recognises Athene in book 13 - shows how they both enjoy deceit, disguise and recognition
‘Goddess, it is hard for a man to recognise you by sight… for you are always changing your disguise.’
