Marimba
•Robert Clayson - Nocturne for Lost Souls
- some contrasting sections, groove ideas, wide range/control of dynamics across the instrument. Challenging piece for 5 octave marimba without being inaccessible harmonically or technically.
-Moments of layering, arpeggiation, working on phrase direction and melody vs. accomp.

• Dave Hall - Ascends the Sky

• Permutations, moving across the marimba, some spots of changing meter.
• Find the “melodic” line within the permutations.
• Modern harmonies while still not quite atonal

Snare
• Eric Willie - Some Things
-Snare drum solo with aspects of marching/rudimental work
-Multiple implements (swizzle stick)
-Contrasting movements, works on independence with 12/8 African bell pattern

• Pratt/Wilcoxon

Vibes
• Jon Metzger - Just Ask
-Jazz related vibraphone pieces
-Pair of two pieces “Did you say we’re done,” and “Which way loose from here”
-Play one or both
-Lead sheets included.
-Some melody/accomp. material, proper voicing of chords
-More straightforward swing/jazz language
-No recordings, student can really explore their own interpretation without playing extreme contemporary or really heavy jazz lit.

Timpani
• Alex Orfaly - Fanfare for Timpani, Studies in Copper, or Delecluse 9, 29, or 30 “Remix”
-Timpani with audio track, experience playing with electronics
-Not incredibly “choppy” pieces but extremely musical
-Odd phrase lengths, but the audio track helps students make sense of this with harmonic and texture changes.

Multi
• Chris Butler - “Don’t Worry..He never felt a thing”
-BD/SD solo. Rudimental in nature, flams/drags, 32nd notes, diddles, etc
-Element of improv. Surdo technique on BD. A couple polyrhythms.

Senior Recital

Answer 2

Marimba - 5 min
• Dave Hall - Apocalyptic Etude (Harder side)
-Triple laterals, octaves
-Tonal enough, but with some harmonic “crunch”
-Mature sense of phrasing, control of phrasing/line
• Abe - Wind in the Bamboo Grove,
Wind Across Mountains - lots of chorale sections
• Sammut - Ameline
-Tonal with jazz harmonic extensions
-Student exploration of melody, voicing

Snare Drum
• Wahlund - Benson Dances
-Based off of Warren Benson 3 dances
-1st mvt similar meter to Warren Benson’s piece, more complex rhythms
-2nd movement “Afreaux Trot” instead of fox-trot.
-3rd mvt. Stick shots and bouncing on head
• Ted Atkatz solos
• Pratt - Pass in Review
-essential rudimental snare literature. Possibly arrange with BD accompaniment

Vibes
• Later Friedman etudes
• Ruud Wiener - Home-Made

Timp
