reciprocity n synchrony Flashcards
-interactions with caregivers
Provide insight into attachment through reciprocity and interactional synchrony
Reciprocity
: Infant responds to actions of another through turn taking with primary caregiver this elicits a response
Meltzoff & Moore (1977)
Conducted observational study showing association between infant behavior and adult model in reciprocity
Interactional synchrony
Infants mirror actions or emotions of another person, serving to sustain communication between caregiver and infant
Limitation of research
questionable reliability of testing children due to constant movement, cannot be certain if behavior occurred intentionally
Methodological problems
possibility of observer bias, need for inter-observer reliability, recent research failing to replicate previous findings
Secure attachment
Only securely attached infants engage in interactional synchrony according to Isabella et al. (1989)
Nature and nurture
Caregiver-infant interactions are innate but interact with environment to prompt a response, must consider both factors to fully understand complexity.
