recession Flashcards
1
Q
what is the difference between true recession and gingival shrinkage?
A
true recession- can be localised/generalise-ID papillae intact- normally occurs on buccal/lingual/palatal gingivae
gingival shrinkage- gum as a whole shrinks (including ID recession) as a result of p disease and p therapy
2
Q
what are causes of true recession?
A
- chronic minor inflammation due to improper toothbrushing
- factitious injury
- orthodontic tx
- excessive scaling
- frenum pulls
- dehiscence -loss of bone - common in low lingual as cortical bone is thin
- fenestration- window of bone missing
3
Q
what are the two types of recession that may be seen?
A
stillmans cleft- sharp v shape in gum
mccalls festoons- rolled gingival margin recession
4
Q
what does recession increase your risk of?
A
- dentine hypersensitivity
- root caries
- toothbrush abrasion of root
5
Q
what treatments are available for recession?
A
- eliminate cause
- treat hypersensitivity- fluoride varnish etc
- diet and OH to avoid root caries
- Periodontal surgery- gingival graft
6
Q
how do you monitor recession?
A
- photographs
- study models
- probe and charts
