dentine hypersensitivity Flashcards
ewhat causes dentine hypersensivity?
exposed dentine can become sensitive when exposed to stimuli such as hot/col/sweet/mechanical which stimulate nerve endings in pulp-causing pain
what is found within dentine tubules?
- fluid
- cells
- odontoblasts
- highly innervated
when does secondary dentine form?
throughout life
when does tertiary dentine form?
in response to insult or injury- pulp forms:
reactionary dentine- formed by odontoblasts- slow formation (minor stimulus)
reparative dentine- formed by odontoblast-like cells- fast formation (major stimulus)- odontoblast death
what treatments can be used on exposed dentine?
- fluoride varnish
- desensitising agents
- insulative restorations
- devitalise tooth- RCT
give examples of desensitising agents
potassium chloride- sensodyne- fills and bonds to tubules
sodium fluoride- fv/fmw- more resistant to acid demineralisation and promotes 2ndry dentine
CaOH- occludes tubules but does not bond well
what can be used for insulative restoration?
seal and protect- painted onto dentine- resin cured- mechanical barrier
cervitec- painted onto dentine- sets itself- fills tubules - mechanical barrier and contains chlorahmexidine- antibacterial
