Receptor Classification By Location Flashcards
Where are Exteroceptors found?
Near the body surface (skin).
Including the special sense organs (eye, ear, nose, taste buds).
What type of stimuli do Exteroceptors respond to?
Stimuli arising outside the body
What are Exteroceptors sensitive to?
Touch Pressure Pain Temperature (I.e. Merkel Disc, pacinian corpuscle, free nerve endings)
What are Interoceptors?
Respond to stimuli arising WITHIN the body
Where are Interoceptors found?
In internal viscera & blood vessels.
Including baroceptors & chemoreceptors.
What are Interoceptors sensitive to?
Chemical changes, smooth muscle stretch, and core body temperature changes.
What are Proprioceptors?
Respond to degrees of stretch of the associated structures.
Continuously inform the brain of one’s movements & position in space.
Where are Proprioceptors found?
In skeletal muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, and connective tissue coverings of bones & muscle.
(Muscle spindles & Golgi tendon organ)
