1
Q

Top-down approach to reading

A

ss build up the message making use of what they already know to help them predict the structure and content of a text and getting a general overall impression (gist) of the message.
* EFL primary school ss prefer to work focusing on meaning rather than on every single word.

Q

Listening Skill

A

Ss need to listen with a purpose. Before we give ss a listening, they have to know what they’re expected to do.

Two possibilitites:
1. ss get the gist: general overview of the main story or message of a conversation
2. ss catch specific details: setting, timing, characters, etc.

The listening shouldn’t be a memory test. We’re trying to teach ss to communicate irl.

Q

Bottom-up approach to listening

A

We understand that it’s impossible to carry out this process in spoken language all the time bc spoken english is too fast to pay attention to all the components of the message.
-> when we listen to a message, we only focus on the relevant info
