Productive Skills Flashcards
Writing Skill
Provide ss with an audience and a purpose
– don’t focus only on language, but also on the message and the meaning of what they’re writing
fast-write: to write non-stop to overcome the blank page terror.
Ss can learn to become better writers by…
1. being actively encouraged and helped to follow through a series of preparatory steps before the final text is produced
2. becoming more aware of that preparation process, so that it can be done more independently and transparently in the future.
to help ss develop their writing skills, we can encourage ss to
* choose a topic
* get ideas
* sequence ideas
* draft a rough text
* get feedback on content
Guided/product writing
imitates model text, organization of ideas is more important than ideas themselves. emphasis on the end product.
Process writing
ideas are the important point, there’s more than one draft, more global, focus on purpose, theme, text type. collaborative, emphasis on the creative process
Unguided writing
Ss write freely without overt guidance, assistance or feedback during the writing process, though work is marked and a title or task may be set
Speaking skill
We teach speaking by engaging sts in different varieties of speech that can be used in real life contexts.
it’s not just grammar what ss are learning, they are also learning social skills, picking up social cues, register, customs, strategies etc.
FLUENCY > ACCURACY
Controlled speaking practice
T controls the linguistic elements used and the material
guided speaking practice
ss have a level of choice but there’s a framework provided by the teacher.
information gap, role-plays, simulation, etc.
Free practice
ss have much more freedom and spontaneity
Accuracy focused practice
- the aim of a correct use of structures and grammatical content
- cements the theoretical framework
- instant correction that interrupts the flow
Fluency focused practice
with the aim of getting ss to speak for uninterrupted periods of time.
1. fosters confidence
2. postponed correction in favor of steady flow of the activity.
- discussions: speak and listen to one another
- role-play
- real-play: create a situation where they are themselves performing an action an another ss is acting
- simulation: to bring props to create a scene
