Recap Flashcards
Iron deficiency anemia
Microcytic, hypochromic, non-regenerative, fragmentation morphologies, and 50 % of the time reactive thrombocytosis.
Look for chronic slow bleed (ie: upper GI tract)
IMHA DX
Usually sever, very regenerative anemia with a lot polychormiatophils (reticulocytes-macrocytic and hypochromic), spherocytes, can have inflammatory leukogram, micr/macroagglutination, possibly ghost cells
Give prednisole and possibly blood transfusion IMMEDIATELY
Anemia of chronic inflammatory dz
Mild, non-regenerative anemia
Normochromic, normocytic
VERY COMMON IN VET MED
Body sequesters iron to hide from bacteria
Fragmentation morphologies
Keratocytes
acanthocytes
schistocytes
In fragmentation morphology look for…
hemangiosarcoma
Iron deficiency anemai (look for RBC indices)
DIC
Liver disease
Bilirubin
Breakdown product of hemoglobin
Metabolized by liver
accumulates and causes icterus in liver disease or increase lysis of RBCs
Bilirubinemia
Can occur with intravascular AND extravascular hemolysis
Hemoglobinemia
Indicator of intravascular hemolysis
