4 principles of growth
- growth rates are not consistent
- different parts of the body grow at different times
- growth rates vary between children
- boys usually grow faster than girls, as they tend to grow taller than women
life span
the length of time a person functions from birth till death

complex changes including learning new things, learning new skills, capabilities and abilities.
define life stages
a different phase of life that all individuals will pass through in a normal life time
6 life stages
infancy (0-2) childhood (3-8) adolescent (9-18) early adulthood (19-45) middle adulthood (46-65) later adulthood (65+)
growth
irreversible constant increase in size, growth in psychomotor capacity - can be measured e.g height/weight/length/mass
continuous but not smooth
grow top to toe

development norms
the stages that every individual is expected to develop at through particular stages of their life

what do health visitors do with results
- plot results on a graph chart to ensure there meeting their milestones
- allows them to identify issues e.g being underweight or growing too slowly
fine motor skills
using smaller muscles in fingers, hands, thumbs
often to hold objects
hand and eye coordination is developed
gross motor skills
using larger muscles in arms, legs, back, neck often to move or lift objects
