Recall the afferent and efferent arms of the accommodation reflex Flashcards
1
Q
Recall the afferent arm of the accomodation reflex
A
• Ganglion cells project from the retina to the pretectal region of the midbrain
2
Q
Recall the efferent arm of the accomodation reflex
A
- The Supraoculomotor area (SOA) fibres project to the oculomotor nucleus and the oculomotor nerve innervates the medial rectus so causes adduction ogboth eyes to allow focus
- The SOA also projects to the edinger-westphnuclei for both eyes, and then via parasympathetic oculomotor fibres to the ciliary ganglion, resulting in contraction of the sphincter pupillae muscles and ciliary muscles, causing a change in the curvature of the lens in order to allow focus as part of the accomodation reflex
