Dealing with the rebellions had cost William a lot of money, what did he order the monasteries to do?
he ordered them to pay for or provide soldiers and confiscated money and treasure that had been hidden in the monasteries

- Replacing Stigand with Lanfranc, an Italian man who came from a monastery in Normandy
- Any churchmen who had sympathised with the rebels were replaced by Normans. Some were imprisoned

He paid them to leave. The Danes took the money but didn’t leave. King Svein of Denmark arrived with more troops

They did not resist, East Anglia had been a Viking stronghold and the people hoped that the Danes would get rid of William

He attacked Peterborough Abbey and took its treasure. He gave the treasure to the Danes and joined forces with them.

They were hungry and tired and the King of Denmark had not brought enough troops
