Q

How serious was the Simnel Rebellion?

A

Simnel was spotted by a priest due to his similarities to Edward, Earl of Warwick. He was taken to Ireland and the Yorkist lords proclaimed him King Edward VI. The Rebellion became more serious by Margret of Burgundy who offered support, 2000 mercenaries and John de la Pole (yorkist claimant) who joined the rebels. The rebels marched through Cumbria, hoping to gain support this was unsuccessful.

Q

Why did the people of Yorkshire think the tax was unfair?

A

They’d had a bad harvest.
Traditionally, people in the south funded the wars with France while the northern counties funded the conflicts with the Scots.
Also some counties had been made except from the tax on grounds of poverty.

Q

How serious was the Yorkshire Rebellion?

A

It was far from London, put down easily and most leaders were executed.
However it required royal force to be put down, the Earl of Northumberland was murdered on his return home from discussing the Rebellion with the King, and Henry did not collect the tax for fear of another Rebellion.
