Henry didn’t want to create super Nobles that could threaten him so he chose member of the gentry and lesser nobles

They owed their entire status and wealth to the Kings patronage

Early in his reign Henry abandoned Edward IVs Policy of distributing lands to loyal followers
He also mainly bestowed patronage on lesser nobles or gentry
What was the Order of the Garter?
Highest and most converted order of chivalry
What was the purpose of the Order of the Garter?
A gift bestowed on nobles or gentry who the King felt deserved a reward
Why did Henry prefer bestowing Order of the Garter rather than a title?
Cheaper than promoting people to title such as Duke or Earl
Didn’t have to give them land just the title

What were Attainders?
Special laws passed by parliament which allowed someone to be declared guilty of treason without a trial
How did Henry use Attainders to his benefit?
To seize the titles and lands of nobles who he suspected as were disloyal

Against his opponents from the Battle of Bosworth
How many Attainders did Henry pass and how many of these did he reverse?

46 were reversed
