Religious grievances - the catalyst being the 1549 book of common prayer
Sheep tax - seen as imposition of an ucaring gov in London hitting local farmers
Wanted to destroy land and kill gentry
What happened in Western Rebellion?
Rebels had 16 demands
Rebels besieged Exeter but were defeated by lord Russels troops in august
Revolt suppressed and 4000 rebels killed
What was Kett’s rebellion
In July 1549, rebels led by Robert Kett captured Norwich
Motivation for kett’s rebellion?
Began w issue of someone having property attacked
Hatred of local gov officials
Resentment of enclosure
Local frustration about maladministration
Religion - wanted prot reforms
What was the outcome of Kett’s rebellion?
Rebels pulled down fences and demanded end to enclosures
Somerset was forced to send army under leadership of John Dudley (Warwick). Rebellion brutally suppressed and kett was hanged
