Why was there competition between Austria-Hungary and Russia (3)

- for many years an area was ruled by the ottoman empire (turkey)
- turkey was collapsing and countries were breaking away
- russia and AH competed for the control in the area

- Serbia a country in the balkans wanted to unite the balkans into an independent state
- AH took over Bosnia a small Balkan province, all this hope was lost.

- June 1914 heir to Austrian emperor Archduke Franz Ferdinand made an official visit to Sarajevo the capital of Bosnia
- while Franz was there he and his wife was assassinated by Gavrillo Princip
