Tension has been building up between countries for a long time that lead to the outbreak of war.

- before ww1 nationalism was a strong force in Europe
- it united people, made them feel proud of their country and they wanted to show they were better.
- therefore build powerful armies and navies to prove their power

- to protect themselves

- Britain was angry because they wanted control over the seas and trade routes
- they began to compete to build the biggest and fastest ships
