- All 3 of the Scottish courts can send someone to prison. This is effective because people who have committed serious crimes are properly punished. This reduces the likelihood of them reoffending

- By locking up dangerous criminals the courts are keeping people off the streets who could commit horrific crimes
- For example, the courts locked up murderer Aaron Campbell to keep the public safe from becoming his next victim

the courts can issue non-custodial sentences

- Such as financial penalties, they could possibly have to give money to their victim/s
- They could also be giving a community payback order which means they do things to improve the community such as litter picking
- these are effective as criminals are receiving an effective punishment
- For example, in 2020 Mark McLean was giving a community payback order for racial assault
