reasons for traffic laws Flashcards
safety
Whether related to speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, how to react to various signs/controls, and steps to take if you do get into a collision with another driver, traffic laws have been carefully designed for the greater good and safety of our roads. Hours of testing, technology and traffic studies have been conducted to determine what works best in terms of a safe driving experience.
Common Understanding
If we all have the same basic understanding of the laws, then we can appreciate and expect certain outcomes and actions from each other. For example, if all drivers know what a traffic light looks like and what to do when you approach one - then we can also expect each driver will stop on red and go on green (heeding to right of way laws, naturally).
Keeping order and movement in traffic
Although we can do little to prevent other drivers from becoming stressed behind the wheel, we can aim to avoid actions that might trigger conflicts by being courteous. It may seem old-fashioned, but a simple wave to say thank you for courtesy extended to you by the other driver will help to make the roads safer and more pleasant.
Recall the golden rule we all learned in Kindergarten: Do unto others, as you would like others to do unto you. This rule applies wholly to driving. Treat other drivers the way you want to be treated on the road. Put yourself in the other driver’s shoes. When you do that, you may realize that every driver deserves courtesy on the road. If a driver one lane over signals that he wants to change lanes, let them in.
