REASONS FOR INCOME AND WEALTH INEQUALITIES Flashcards
Education opening sentence
Education is a key factor in the level of pay received in a job and whether there is a wealth inequality present or not
Education point 1
The attainment gap in Scotland proves that there is a difference in the level of education received by deprived pupils compared to well-off pupils.
Education point 2
Private education can help wealthy children to retain their wealth. Private schools encourage extra curricular activities which develop confidence and skills for the workplace whilst also providing quality teaching, allowing students to achieve higher paid jobs.
Education example 1
In 2022, there was around a 15% attainment gap in Higher pass rates between the 20% most deprived and the 20% of the richest students
Education example 2
In 2019, 65% of senior judges were from private education
Education analysis 1
This means that those already deprived are less likely to get the grades for a university course, leading them to choose jobs that don’t require a degree and are therefore lower paid. In poorer paid jobs, people do not have enough money in their disposable income for basic needs, keeping them in the poverty cycle. The cycle of poverty means that they can pass their poor income onto their children and therefore the UK has more people in poverty
Education analysis 2
This means that those privately educated can gain higher wages and therefore increase the financial inequalities. This increases the inequality because rich people are getting richer and earning more money yet poor peers struggle more and more to make ends meet for their family
Gender opening sentence
Gender is a common cause of income and wealth inequalities as women typically suffer from lower pay.
Gender point 1
The type of occupation that women are typically associated with is usually undervalued and underpaid.
Gender point 2
childcare costs can negatively impact a female’s career negatively.
Gender example 1
It is estimated that being in a female dominated industry can reduce pay by 9%.
Gender example 2
A survey said that 43% of mothers considered leaving their jobs due to childcare costs
Gender analysis 1
The reason for this is because the skills that women can do can be underappreciated so girls can initially be taught in school to go into ‘easier’ jobs(KU). This means that women will typically get less money than men and so struggle to afford bills for themselves and their family. This can result in poverty and financial inequality between the genders of men and women
Gender analysis 2
The reason for this is typically because instead of paying the demanding costs, a mother can change their job to less hours so they can partake in childcare themselves. This means they may have to change jobs or take on less money from their employer. As lower hour jobs do not pay as highly, a pay gap arises as women typically are the parent who has to pay for childcare since women are more likely to be lone parents.
