REASONS FOR HEALTH INEQUALITIES Flashcards
poverty opening sentence
Poverty is a large factor in health inequalities in the UK. Having less money can mean that families cannot afford good quality housing.
Poverty point 1
Poorer housing estates tend to have a lack of facilities and badly made homes. This can cause mould and damp which can lead to residents getting breathing issues such as asthma.
Poverty point 2
GPs in deprived areas are less likely to be of high quality due to a lack of funding.
Poverty example 1
research found that people with asthma are 2 times as likely to live in a home with dampness.
Poverty example 2
there is £10 less funding per patient in Possilpark (a deprived area) GPs compared to Bears Den (a wealthier area).
Poverty analysis 1
This suggests that poorer areas of housing means that residents are more likely to be ill and have poor health. This means that they get less opportunities in things such as sport and exercise, further damaging their health.
Poverty analysis 2
This suggests that despite deprived areas typically needing more doctor support, they get less. The lack of funding could lead to less nurses and doctors working there, reducing the volume of appointments able to be made. This could lead to people having to wait to be seen and therefore their conditions worsening, disrupting their health.
Overall poverty
poverty is a big factor in health inequalities. This is because affluent areas typically provide better resources for its residents. Funding in GP surgeries can really determine how good a person’s health is and the quality of homes can be extremely detrimental to people’s respiratory systems.
