Within the hierarchy, each court has developed their own area of specialisation in relation to criminal cases.
Reasons for Court hierarchy - appeals
if there are grounds to appeal a case, a party who is dissatisfied with the result of their criminal case can take the matter to a higher court.
the party who appeals is called the appellant and the other party is the respondent.
Grounds to appeal a case
appealing on a question of law > where some law has not been followed.
appealing a conviction > can only be done by the offender.
appealing due to the severity or leniency of a sanction imposed. > the prosecution will appeal on leniency, the offender will appeal on severity.
