Rearfoot Varus and valgus Flashcards
What type of deformity is a rearfoot varus?
positional-inversion of rearfoot relative to ground when STJ is in neutral
3 etiologies of RF varus?
tibial varum, subtalar varum, calcaneal varum
causes of tibial varum
genu varum, Blount’s, failure of tibia to straighten from the infantile position
causes of STJ varum
uneven epiphyseal growth, wedge shaped talus, retention of varus calcaneal torsion at birth
causes of calcaneal varum
improper development, malaligned calcaneal fx
What is the most common and 2nd most common compensation for RF varus?
1st: eversion of STJ to get heel to vertical
2nd: flexible plantarflexed 1st ray
Signs and sx of uncompensated and partial compensated RF varus
callus sub 5th metahead and metabase, peroneal tendonitis, lateral ankle instability, retrocalcaneal exostosis, sesamoiditis, tailor’s bunion, genu valgum, ankle valgus
What can compensated RF varus lead to?
forefoot hypermobility secondary to delayed resupination in gate, the forefoot is unstable in propulsion leading to shearing calluses
What type of deformity is rearfoot valgus? What causes it?
structural
caused by traumatic injury or congenital deformity
How do you measure RF and FF varus and valgus?
RF: weight bearing
FF: non weight bearing
How do you make an orthosis for fully compensated RF varus?
the heel is vertical to ground
What kind of orthosis for partial or uncompensated RF varus?
post the heel the same number of degrees as the RF varus-pt cannot get heel to vertical with these deformities
What kind of orthosis for RF valgus?
post the heel the same number of degrees of eversion as the RCSP
