Reality Therapy Flashcards
Developed by
William Glasser
Based on…
choice theory, stating all we do is behave, almost all behavior is chosen, we are driven by our genes to satisfy five basic needs
5 basic needs
survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, fun
Goal is
to help people reconnect since unsatisfactory or non-existent connections with people are at the source of almost all human problems, to help people identify and clarify their wants, desires, hopes and dreams.
Focus on…
the present, avoid discussing the past
Avoid..
discussing symptoms and complaints (how clients deal with unsatisfying relationships), criticizing, blaming and/or complaining
Total behavior
Focus on what client can do directly (thinking and acting) rather than what they cannot do directly (feeling, and physiology). Feelings and physiology can only be changed, when there is change in acting and thinking.
Non judgmental, non-coercive, but
help people judge their actions via choice theory axiom - is what I am doing getting me closer to what I need (or the people I need)?
Excuses…
stand in the way of making connections
Plans
make specific, workable plans to reconnect or make new connections, evaluate progress - client can revise/reject plan
Keep focus on source of problem
disconnectedness
Belief
mental distress occurs when basic psychological needs are not met
Role of therapist
help client understand own needs/desires and develop plan to meet needs = form, reform or strengthen connections with others; help client consider effects of behavior on area of concern - focus on things you can control/ can change, not things outside of her control
power
sense of winning, achieving, self-worth
love and belonging
to family, community, loved ones
