predictable, self-fulfilling prophecy based on our psychological feelings about ourselves; therapy helps clients navigate lifestyle tasks; how we move towards our life goals
private logic
how life is in reality is less important than how client believes life to be; interpretation of childhood events is crucial
social connectedness
individual’s attitude and awareness of being part of the human community; important for happiness and success; become a contributor
goals of misbehavior
attention, power, revenge, display of inadequacy
4 stages of therapy
Engagement - therapist and client agree to collaborate on problem at hand and form alliance; Assessment - therapist takes client’s history, including birth order and early recollections; Insight - therapist helps client see his situation or role differently; Re-orientation - therapist gives clients activities for outside therapy to reinforce insight or create new insight
Encouragement
instills self confidence by expecting clients to assume responsibility for their lives, and embrace the fact that they can make changes
Birth order
Oldest child - receives more attention, spoiled, center of attention; second of only two - behaves as if in race, often opposite to first child; middle - often feels squeezed out; youngest - the baby; only - does not learn to share or cooperate with other children, learns to deal with adults

What would life be like if you were functioning in an ideal manner? Act “as if” you don’t have the problem.
