Realistic Conflict Theory Flashcards
What is realistic conflict theory
Sherif proposed that prejudice often results from conflict between two groups. Whenever there is more than one group in competition for resources there will be negative feelings, prejudice and discrimination toward the other group
How can prejudice be reduced
Prejudice and hostility could be reduced when people work together on a common goal e.g superordinate goals
Evidence for realistic conflict theory
Sheriffs robbers car experiment provides evidence for RCT
Found boys would favourite their own group and hostility towards the other group when in competition, e.g for points and prizes
That said Jane Elliot would argue that the mere presence of a group creates prejudice, suggesting that RCT is not a complete theory
Strengths and shortcomings of RCT
Considered reductionist as it does not take individual differences into account e.g some people are not prejudice some people may be more likely to be prejudice
Good thing to be reductionist because
