What is realistic conflict theory

A

Sherif proposed that prejudice often results from conflict between two groups. Whenever there is more than one group in competition for resources there will be negative feelings, prejudice and discrimination toward the other group

A

Prejudice and hostility could be reduced when people work together on a common goal e.g superordinate goals

Evidence for realistic conflict theory

A

Sheriffs robbers car experiment provides evidence for RCT
Found boys would favourite their own group and hostility towards the other group when in competition, e.g for points and prizes
That said Jane Elliot would argue that the mere presence of a group creates prejudice, suggesting that RCT is not a complete theory
