What is Realism
a literary period and a method. It is defined as a faithful representation of reality or “verisimilitude”
Time Period
1850s-1910
Factors that contributed to Realism
- the Civil War
- the increasing rates of democracy and literacy
- the rapid growth in industrialism
- an expanding population due to immigration
- a relative rise in middle-class affluence provided
Characteristics of Realism:
- Method in which authors base their writing on observations of contemporary life,
often focusing in the lower or middle classes. - Attempt to present life objectively and honestly
- Develop settings in great detail in an effort to re-create a specific time period for
the reader
Local Color
imitates ordinary life and brings a particular region alive
Naturalism
literary movement that attempted to portray realistic situations often with a pessimistic and detached tone.
Surrealism
an artistic attempt to bridge together reality and the imagination.
Pragmatism
the concept of dealing with things sensibly and realistically
Verisimilitude
the appearance of being true or real
Dialect
applied to the different speech patterns of people from different regions.
Colloquialism
the usage of informal or everyday language in literature.
Situational Irony
something happens that is very different than what was expected.
Verbal Irony
a form of irony in which someone says or writes something that is in opposition to the person’s true meaning.
Dramatic Irony
occurs in a piece of literature when the audience knows something that some characters in the narrative do not
