Regions victory in 1980 was partly a matter of good timing. When many felt a deep sense of disenchantment with the state of the economy society and politics in the country.
Defeat in Vietnam and the loss of many American lives seem to have unleashed deep cultural conflicts between young Old rich and poor, black and white and even men and women
Election results
Only 28% voted for him 25% voted for Carter and 47% voters stayed at home
These statistics suggested disillusionment with politics in general.
