Reading: 5 Primary Design Principles
What are they?
1) Visual Contrast
2) Legibility
3) Figure Ground Organization
4) Hierarchical Organization
5) Balance
Reading: 5 Principles of Map Design (Glasgow, 1999)
What is the design purpose?
5 Principles?
Design purpose is to focus attention somewhere.
1) Concept before Compilation
2) Hierarchy with Harmony
3) Simplicity from Sacrifice
4) Maximum Information at minimum cost
5) Engage the emotion, engage the understanding
Reading: How useful is Tufte for making Maps?
What are the 6 commandments?
1) Map Substantial Information
2) Don’t Lie With Maps
3) Effectively Label maps
4) Minimize Map Crap
5) Map Layout Matters
6) Evaluate your Map
Chorochromatic Maps
What are they?
Pattern has no meaning other than presence, absence.
Coloured maps.
Choropleth Maps
2 types?
Magnitude of data is proportional to some attribute.
2 types:
Classless Choropleth Maps - shading based on unit values, not grouping polygons into classes.
Range Graded Choropleth Maps - data are grouped into classes.
5 Important Steps When Creating Chropleth Maps
1) Check suitability of data
2) Is it Classless or Range Graded
3) Determine the number of classes
4) Determine the class intervals
5) Determine which visual clues can further show difference between classes.
When do you use Goodness Variance Fit Test
to check how well your classification presents minimum variation within groups and maximum variation between groups.
In terms on Quantile classification, what is important about it?
equal number of observations in each class.
