Q

Taxonomy and characterization in a digital world: one person’s claim.

Chinese classification is subjective- one person could think something would be “frenzied” and another could think it looked like flies from long ways away

Classifications become problematic when we don’t view them critically- eugenics, hierarchy of non-white races based on the shape of their skull

Q

Taxonomy and characterization in a digital world: one person’s claim.

You can’t compare real and mythical animals because they can’t coexist in a
non-written setting, just like you can’t compare digital to non-digital. It’s two different worlds.

Thinks that the other guy is trying to connect things that are different from one another.

In regards to the relationship with technology, as technology is introduced, the order of things and how we view them changes

Language lets us think the unthinkable, which is why we can put things in order and let them intersect (we use language to define and contrast). Language is what connects how things are represented versus how they actually are.

There is a specific “order of things”, and it changes the way we as society view them

Q

Medium: thing, Message: how the thing affects humans

Media is an extension of us as ourselves

Example: Filters on Snapchat.
Kim Kardashian has a filter,
how is this an extension of ourselves? It is a reflection of ourselves because we are fixated and focused and mesmerized by celebrities

A

McLuhan, relation between medium and the message. Think about ‘where you stand on the issue’ (1)

Q

Medium: thing, Message: how the thing affects humans

Media shapes the way we see the world.

  • We are shaped by media, but we aren’t as shaped by the content we are shaped by the medium itself
  • We ‘remember’ an event by looking at a picture even if we don’t actually remember it
  • We always know the message of a commercial, this is an example of when the medium is the message

Q

Medium: thing, Message: how the thing affects humans

The use of different types of medium will get different reactions from different people

How do we get our news?
Facebook, Snapchat, Daily Skimm, News apps, Buzzfeed

The media controls the message - snap filter about Orlando, not about ISIS in Turkey

As technology changes, the message of the media changes as well, or the messages that we see through media changes. Tech becomes an extension of us and can affect us (maybe corrupt us??) and so then society will change.
