pre-reading
Two types of Rapid Reading
Skimming and Scanning
a quick reading strategy which aims to get specific information from a given text.
Scanning
involves clarifying the purpose, reading the title and headings, and checking the illustration and other visuals. Another example is browsing, or inspecting unhurriedly, the table of contents, introduction, or summary.
Previewing
involves recalling and understanding of ideas and facts that are directly stated in the text - requires reading of the work, but requires little thought or understanding - includes note-taking, summarizing, and paraphrasing
Literal Reading
two types of literal reading
summarizing and paraphrasing
condensing a lengthy text into a shorter passage without losing its main idea.
Summarizing
restating ideas from the original text. The length of a paraphrased text is almost similar to the length of the original text.
Paraphrasing
involves interpreting information implied in the text; the reader seeks to follow patterns and see relationships among parts of the text - requires reading of the work AND consideration of what has been read - includes making generalizations, inferences, and conclusions
Inferential or interpretative reading
involves evaluating information based on personal knowledge and experiences - refers to the close and thorough evaluation of the claims in the text in terms of relevance, validity, and logic - requires the reader to think more abstractly and relate the text to real life - includes distinguishing facts from opinions and detecting logical fallacies
