Reading Comprehension Flashcards

Q

“A standard comprises characteristics attached to an aspect of a process or product by which it can be evaluated. Standardization is the development and adopting of standards. When they are formulated, standards are not usually the product of a single person, but represent the thoughts and ideas of a group, leavened with the knowledge and information which are currently available.
Standards which do not meet certain basic requirements become a hindrance rather than an aid to progress. Standards must not only be correct, accurate, and precise in requiring no more and no less than what is needed for satisfactory results, but they must also be workable in the sense that their usefulness is not nullified by external conditions. Standards should also be acceptable to the people who use them. If they are not acceptable, they cannot be considered to be satisfactory, although they may possess all the other essential characteristics.”

According to the above paragraph, a processing standard that requires the use of materials that cannot be procured, is most likely to be

A: incomplete.
B: inaccurate.
C: unworkable.
D: unacceptable.

Q

“The sentiment of the community is not always favorable to procedures designed to accomplish the police purpose. Unfavorable public attitudes may make the immediate adoption of a superior procedure impractical. A necessary part of the task of achieving police objectives is the development of public attitudes favorable to their attainment. The police, therefore, must be organized to inform the public regarding the significance and consequences of failures in law enforcement and compliance and also regarding police requirements and the results of failure to meet them. The police cannot progress ahead of public sentiment since there must be general acceptance by the people of controls that are applied by the police in order to completely accomplish the basic police objectives. The development of favorable public sentiment is a relatively long-range project, whereas organization requirements are immediate. The organizational structure, therefore, must be designed to conform somewhat to public attitudes. As public sentiment changes, modification of the structure may be desirable.”

According to the above paragraph, modifications of the police organizational structure should

A: be considered in instances where public sentiment has also changed.
B: be designed to anticipate major changes in public attitudes.
C: be regarded as a relatively long-range project.
D: follow closely any changes in public sentiment.

A

A: be considered in instances where public sentiment has also changed.

“Under the Vehicular Responsibility Law of a certain state, an insurance carrier who has previously furnished the Division of Roads and Vehicles with evidence of a vehicle registrant’s financial responsibility (Form VR-1, VR-1A, VR-2, VR-2B or VR-11) must, in case of termination of insurance, first notify the insured registrant at least 10 days in advance if the termination is due to failure to pay the insurance premium and at least 20 days if the termination is due to any other reason. The insurance carrier must then notify the Division not later than 30 days following the effective date of actual termination of insurance coverage. The only acceptable proof of such termination is Form VR-4.
“Upon receipt of Form VR-4 by the Division, a search will be made for any

Only after the registrant has failed to comply by one of the above three methods is an order to cancel the registration (Form VR-8) issued.
“Upon the issuance of a cancellation order, a copy of the order is mailed to the registrant directing him to immediately surrender his plates and registration certificate to a specified area office of the Division. At the same time, two copies of the cancellation order are sent to the area office, where they are held for 15 days. If the registrant complies with the order, he is issued a notice of compliance (Form VR-3). If he fails to comply within the 15 days, two more copies of the order are mailed to the Highway Patrol for enforcement of the cancellation order. No further action is taken for a period of 30 days. If no record of enforcement is received another copy of the cancellation order is sent to the
Police Department as a follow up.”
