What are the 4 elements of LASS?
- Gaining attention- Child’s focus on book
- Query- asking questions about pictures or story
- Labelling- Telling a child what an object or word is
- Feedback- responding to the child’s utterance
What is socio-dramatic play?
Where children take on specific roles and act out situations that could happen in real life

What are Kroll’s writing stages?
Barry Kroll categorises them into 4 stages
Stage 1 Kroll
Preparatory: basic motor skills for writing and spelling principles
Stage 2 Kroll
Consolidation: Up to 6, writes how they speak, short declaratives, and/but and incomplete sentences
Stage 3 Kroll
Differentiation: Up to age 9, Speaking and writing differences, recognises writing styles eg. letters, lots of mistakes, frameworks and structures followed, reflects thoughts and feelings
Stage 4 Kroll
Integration: Up to 12+
Personal style developed
Understands changing style according to audience/purpose
Graphophonic cues
Looking at shapes of words, linking these to graphemes to interpret them
Semantic cue
Understanding word meanings and making connections between words to decode others
Visual cues
Looking at the pictures and using the visual narratives to interpret unfamiliar words
Syntactic cues
Applying knowledge of word order and classes to work out if a word fits into the context
Contextual cues
Looking for understanding using story and own experiences/social conventions
Miscue
When a child makes an error, such as missing or substituting a similar word
