Reading 1 Flashcards
Env sci vs Env studies?
Sci looks more at the natural sciences while studies also looks at humanities -> get closer to UNDERLYING CAUSE
proximate cause
imidiate and discriptive -> GHG, climate change
underlying cause
analytical and long-term -> consumerism and values
Values effect on Climate Change
1) Change only occurs once values chance
2) how does one value the environment?
3) ecosystem integrity changes as values change
whats Science-based management?
focus sci on key issues and be in a form clear to non-specialists (policy-relevant form)
clearly identify issues and estimate consequences
Avoid advocacy of single solution (is it sci or just value/)
ecocentric/biocentric values
nature deserves to exist for the sake of existing.
Humans disrupt the balance
values prefer low-impact tech
technocentric
humans have the understanding to manipulate nature
tech will overcome resource shortages
nature exists for humanity
anthropocentric
interprets or regards the world in terms of human values and experiences
ecosystem perspective
all disciplines affect the other, just like an ecosystem does. EX ethics, quality, well-being, living and non-living things
must inspect problems as a dynamic system, not one that just adapts
