Reactor Coolant System Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the purpose/function of the RCP’s?

A

The RCPs circulate water through the reactor core in a closed piping system at a sufficient rate to insure proper heat transfer and prevent excessive fuel temperatures.

Q

What is the design/function of the Reactor Coolant System?

A

The pressure and fission product boundary between the reactor coolant and the containment.

A heat transfer path to bring the reactor to a safe shutdown state and maintain it there.

Transfers heat to the feedwater which is transformed to steam to drive the turbine generator for electrical power production.

Q

What is the purpose/function of the Pressurizer including heaters and spray?

A

Pressurizer heaters in the liquid space are used to form steam to raise and maintain pressure.
The pressurizer spray valves inject water into the pressurizer vapor space to condense steam in the vessel and to prevent the pressurizer pressure from reaching the setpoint of the PORV

Q

What is the purpose/function of the Pressurizer PORV’s?

A

The power-operated relief valves are designed to limit the pressurizer pressure to a value below the high pressure reactor trip set point for all design transients. During normal operating conditions, these valves are set to open at 2335 psig

6
Q

How does the Reactor Coolant System ensure decay heat removal is available following a loss of offsite power?

A

the RCS maintains cooling flow through the core by, first, the RCP coast-down and, afterwards, by natural circulation through the core.
