Reactivity Trends Flashcards
Group 2 reactions with H20
- Produces Hydrogen gas and Metal hydroxide
* M(OH)2
Group 2 reactions with Oxygen
- Needs to be heated
* Produces Metal oxide

CARBONATE TEST
1) Add Nitric acid (aq)
•If a carbonate ion is present CO2 will form
2) To determine if the gas is really CO2, Bubble solution through Limewater Ca(OH)2
•If the gas is CO2 the limewater will turn cloudy due to a white precipitate of CaCO3 in H20.
SULFATE TEST
1) Acidify solution with HCL
2) Add Barium Chloride
•If sulfate ions are present a white precipitate of BaSO4 will form
AMMONIUM TEST
1) Add NaOH to solution
2) Heat solution
3) Test the gas formed with litmus paper
•If litmus paper turns blue the Ammonium ions are present
HALIDE ION TEST
1) Add (aq) Silver nitrate to solution
•If a white precipitate is formed then Cl- ions are present
•If a cream precipitate is formed then Br- ions are present
•If a yellow precipitate is formed then I- are present
2) To distinguish between Br- and I- Add concentrated NH3
•If precipitate dissolves then Br- are present
•If precipitate does not dissolve then I- are present
