Reactivity Tests Flashcards
what does it mean when it’s easier for a metal to form its positive ion
the more reactive it is
When metals react with other substances, the metal atoms always form what
positive ions
what are native metals
native metals are very unreactive metals found in the earth’s crust
give 2 examples of native metals
1) gold
2) platinum
what is a displacement reaction
a displacement reaction is when a more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from a compound.
NOTE:
Magnesium + copper sulfate → magnesium sulfate + copper
Mg(s) + CuSO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
NOTE:
Magnesium + copper sulfate → magnesium sulfate + copper
Mg(s) + CuSO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
what is oxidation
atom loses an electron
what is reduction
atom gains an electron
displacement reactions are examples of what
redox reactions
