reactivity series Flashcards
why do metals have different reactivities
a more reactive metal will easily lose electrons to form a positive ion, hence the more reactive the material
how are metals extracted
PSCM - electrolysis (highly reactive)
ZILHCS - reduction by carbon (not as reactive)
what is the reaction between metal and steam
metal oxide and hydrogen
what is the reaction between metal and cold water
metal hydroxide and hydrogen
how does potassium react
cold water - reacts very violently, hydrogen catches fire and explode with lilac flames
steam - explosively
hcl - explosively
how does sodium react
cold water - reacts violently, hydrogen gas catches fire and explode in yellow flame
steam - reacts explosively
hcl - reacts explosively
how does calcium react
cold water - readily
steam - reacts explosively
hcl -violently
how does magnesium react
cold water - very slowly
steam - violently
hcl - rapidly
how does zinc react
cold water - none
steam - readily
hcl - moderately fast
how does iron react
cold water- none
steam - slowly
hcl - slowly
lead reaction
hcl - stops after a while as an insoluble layer of ___ forms around lead, preventing it from further reaction
what is rsuting
rusting is a slow oxidation to form hydrated iron (lll) oxide, a reddish-brown substance
how is rust formed
presence of O2 and H2O
what happens to the mass when rust is formed
mass increases as oxygen and water chemically combines with iron to form rust
why prevent rust
act as a layer of barrier that prevents iron from getting into contact with oxygen and water which forms rust
