reactivity of metals Flashcards
what is an oxidation/reduction
oxidation - gaining oxygen
reduction - loosing oxygen
what is the reactivity series?
what do metals above hydrogen react with
the series show the metals in the order of reactivity. Metals above hydrogen react with acid. metals below hydrogen don’t react with acids
when metals react with acids what does it produce?
metal salts and hydrogen
when metals react what does it form
when metals react, they loose electrons and forms a positive ion
What is a displacement reaction?
a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound.
what is an ore?
naturally occurring rock that contains meatal/ metal compounds
where are unreactive metals found
in the earth’s surface as a metal itself
how can metal oxides be extracted from their oxides
metals that are less reactive with carbon can be extracted from their oxides by heating with carbon
how can metals be extracted from molten compounds
metals that are more reactive with carbon are extracted from molten compounds by electrolysis
what is oxidation and reduction in terms of electrons
oxidation is the loss of electrons (OIL)
reduction is the gain of electrons (RIG)
what is the equation for a reaction between metals and acids?
metal + acid —> salt + hydrogen
which metals in the reactivity series will react with acid
those above hydrogen
